Alta, UT, Report: Powder Skiing The Gunsight Area in Scary, Thin, & Deep-In-Spots Conditions

Report from November 13, 2024

I was too scared to go back into Main Chute at Alta, Utah, yesterday so I decided to go hit the backside near Gunsight hoping the wind would have filled it in well.

The wind had done it’s job but it was clear you still wanted to stay in the gullies and concavities that had gathered the most snow.

Coverage was pretty good up high although dry grass was still sticking out of the snow in many spots.

We climbed up 1,200′ and skied a mostly tracked-out gully that came off the ridgeline.

The snow was deep and dry.

The turns were good.

We went back up for one more with the same results.

I was cringing on nearly every turn but we never hit any rocks.

The lower mountain was a different story and I simply zig zagged slowly down the entire slope and softly hit quite a few rocks at a slow, controlled speed.

The skis bases are still core shot free which feels like a win.

Alta closes to uphill traffic on Saturday while they prepare for their November 22 opening day.

I’m off to Jamaica for a family vacation on Saturday that appears to be well-timed as I don’t trust skiing anywhere in Utah outside of Alta right now.

By the time I get back, ski resorts should be in full swing here in Utah and I can’t wait to ride some chairlifts.

Yesterday was ski day #521 in the past 2 years.

Thanks, Utah!
