Gear Review: CAST Binding System Last year Silas, Lars and the guys from CAST Touring introduced the innovative SI&I bindings system to the world of backcountry skiing, and I was lucky enough to get in on the first production run via kickstarter. After three solid months using them on my DPS Wailer 112 carbons, skiing in a variety of conditions from New England to Canada, I can say this is a damn cool system that comes very […] Gear Review Guest Author | May 18, 2014 6 Comments
Tahoe’s 2013/14 Winter from a Local’s Perspective The first installment of my personal webisode series, The White Room. It was a fun, but less than optimal winter in Tahoe this season. Episode 1 is a testament to the perseverance and positive attitude that can turn a bad winter into a good one. A big thanks to everyone that helped make this happen, especially my sponsors (Praxis Skis, Shred Ready Helmets, Janky Films). Enjoy! This video was shot at Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Alta, Jackson Hole, Teton Pass, Donner Pass, and the […] Guest Author | May 15, 2014 1 Comment
Mt. Shasta, CA Conditions Report: May 13th, 2014 There are few absolutes when climbing Mt. Shasta in spring. One is almost guaranteed; wind. Blowing, gusty, steady, fierce, biting, however you describe it, you better plan for it. We certainly had some last week but with the right preparation, attitude, and equipment, teams reached the summit from Casaval Ridge, the West Face, and Avalanche Gulch. Hearty congratualtions to all our climbers and hard working guides, you guys rock! […] Conditions Report Guest Author | May 14, 2014 2 Comments
Eastern Sierra Backcountry Report: 13,225′ Mt. Emerson 10 years down the road, which days in the backcountry will you remember as though they were yesterday? The fun days party lapping your favorite stash, or the bizarre days trying to do something ridiculous? The days when everything goes perfectly, or the days when everything is a struggle? Every day is great in its own way, but the day that Ryan, Ben, and I went up Emerson in mid-May of a year with record-low snow […] Conditions Report Guest Author | May 14, 2014 3 Comments
Sonora Pass, CA Backcountry Report: May 11th, 2014 Drove down from Truckee today [May 11th, 2014] and arrived at Sonora Pass around 9:30am. I knew from the weather report the night before that wind was in the forecast. Well for once that forecast was correct. It was probably gusting 25 mph at the PCT trailhead parking lot, and I was worried what it was doing higher up on the ridges. I got out and walked around and checked the snow. It was firm and the […] Conditions Report Guest Author | May 13, 2014 1 Comment
April was the Best Month of the Year at Squaw | Here’s Its POV Highlight Video Well, 2014 kinda blew sunshine up everyone’s ass in Tahoe this year, but April was a blast! Thanks for the sweet joke of a season, nature. But Kyle Cota and that animal Fox got like 18,000 hits for their video, so here’s me re-learning how to shred after I […] Guest Author | May 13, 2014 1 Comment
Tioga Pass, CA Report: Chuting Ellery Bowl in Pow on May 7th It’s May 6, 2014 and it’s dumping big fat wet flakes in June Lake, Ca. Is it accumulating? No. But at only 7,800 ft, that’s not surprising in spring. It has to be sticking above 10,000 ft. Right? Right?! After a meager — but fun — winter every little scrap garners excitement, at least in me. Most sane people around these parts are climbing in the Gorge or Yosemite or the Happy’s. But there are definitely a few of us diehards out there. You know who you are, all 20 of you. I’m sure you were out there, somewhere, on this same day. If we ever meet, I’ll buy you a drink. Sonora Pass, CA Report: May 3rd & 4th Corn Harvest Drove up from the Bay last Saturday, got a late start….clicked into our skis and started skinning @10am from 9,924-Foot Sonora Pass, CA (hwy 108). Original plan was to head up to No-Name and ski the bowl then head back to the saddle to the east to do more recon than anything as I’ve usually skied the couloirs off Leavitt and then either down Deadmans creek to the hairpin or back up to No-Name and down the main bowl. Quickly audibled as we saw a group of 10-15 heading up No-Name and went straight for the saddle to the east. First run was an extremely short/mellow tree lined pitch back down to the bench to get a better idea […] Conditions Report Guest Author | May 8, 2014 0 Comments
