Starting Thursday, November 21, Avalanche Canada will begin issuing daily avalanche forecasts, coinciding with expected snowfall in the coming week.
This year, Avalanche Canada has made significant improvements to its forecasting system. The organization now provides updated forecasts for 12 regions across western Canada, offering more precise and localized information for backcountry users.
One of the most exciting additions is the introduction of Hot Zone Reports. This pilot project aims to provide detailed information on avalanche conditions and risk management advice for specific areas, giving backcountry users an extra layer of safety information.
Weather data has also received an upgrade. Users can now access detailed information on snowfall, air temperature, wind speed and direction, and relative humidity by clicking on regional icons. Avalanche Canada plans to expand its network of weather stations throughout the season, further enhancing the accuracy of its forecasts.
With a La Niรฑa event predicted for the upcoming winter, backcountry enthusiasts are likely to encounter prime conditions. However, this also means increased avalanche risk. Avalanche Canada strongly advises all backcountry users to keep their safety certifications up to date and to always carry essential safety gear, including a transceiver, shovel, and probe.
Avalanche Canada offers training courses in various locations for those looking to brush up on their avalanche safety skills. These courses teach participants how to read avalanche conditions, make critical judgments, and handle emergency situations – though avoiding poor conditions is always the best strategy.
