Report from September 1, 2023
I was at Mikey’s birthday party last night when a buddy showed me a video of it snowing hard at the base of Cerro Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina.
It was 9:30pm.
I immediately grabbed my jacket, kissed everyone goodbye, and hustled home.
It was pouring rain in town and the knowledge that it was all snow above had me reeling.
By 8am we were bouncing in the X Trail up mountain.
The snow I’d seen the previous night had gotten rained on…
The lower mountain snow was very funky.
Regardless, we pressed on and worked our way into our favorite grove of old-growth Lenga trees.
The snow was rippable.
It was the consistency of soft-serve ice cream.
It was heavy to start with then got very heavy down low.
Wasn’t bad, though and we had a riot battling through the bamboo in the runout.
Do be careful in the forests here right now, please.
Our buddy just broke his lower leg yesterday in the woods hitting an unseen obstacle under the snow…
When we came back to the base area the lines were pretty long due to not much being open because of the very high winds.
We decided to call it a day and ruminate on our good fortune and the smiles on our faces.
Thanks, Patagonia!
