Beartooth Basin, Montana, has been a premier summer skiing and riding destination since 2002. The summit of the Beartooth Pass has a rich history of skiing dating back to the 1950s. Beartooth Basin offers one of the most unique skiing experiences in the country. Beartooth Basin is one of only six summer-only ski areas in the world. While some resorts can offer year-round or close to year-round skiing, there are only six ski areas that are either completely inaccessible during winter or simply too cold or dark to operate during the winter months, and thus only able to open in summer: Beartooth Basin, Montana, Stelvio Pass, Italy, Gassan, Japan, and Stryn Sommerski, Folgefonna and Galdhรธppigen, Norway. Unfortunately, Beartooth Basin has had a few unfortunate seasons due to inclement weather affecting operations.

After three consecutive bad seasons, Beartooth Basin is planning to open for skiing and snowboarding operations on May 25, 2025. The ski area announced on its website that it would be open this summer after not being open in 2024 and 2022 because of a lack of snow and was only open for two-and-a-half weeks in 2023. Beartooth Basin is 23 miles southwest of Red Lodge, Montana, at the Twin Lakes Headwall on Beartooth Pass.

Beartooth Basin Stats:

  • Established in the mid-1960s
  • 10,900 feet peak elevation
  • 9,900 feet base elevation
  • 1,000 vertical feet
  • Two high-speed platter lifts
  • Skiing terrain that varies in pitch from 15ยฐ to 50ยฐ
  • 3,000 vertical feet of shuttled or hike-in backcountry skiing and riding

The major question is, will Beartooth Basin open on May 25, or will it delay its opening, shut down after a few weeks, or cancel the whole season like in past years? Even though Beartooth Basin plans on opening this summer, it is also for sale for partial or full investment. โ€œWe will continue to operate the business until we find the right group that shares our vision for independent community-based ski operations. Come take a lap at the Basin this summer to generate your interest!โ€ Beartooth Basin wrote on its website.
