Purpose:
The Pro-Tec Cyphon SL Helmet is an all mountain half-shell helmet which provides a higher degree of cranial protection non-specific mountain bike helmets. The Cyphon SL features a BOA fastening system and allows use with goggles.
Materials and Procedure:
The Cyphon SL helmet was tested and worn in an all mountain atmosphere throughout British Columbia’s West Coast. Compared with Specialized Tactic II and other all mountain helmets.
Data:
- 15 Large vents
- 4 Sizes: Small to Extra Large
- Three colourways
- 390g as size Small
- MSPR $109.95
Observations:
The Cyphon SL helmet by Pro-Tec provides good coverage around the head for protection from impact during mountain biking. Though it is not as well ventilated as some other helmets in this genre, the Cyphon SL uses larger vents to direct airflow beneath the helmet. These vents are large and allow air to move easily but do not detract from the appearance, and more importantly, the strength of the helmet.
Utilizes the Boa Fit System, the Cyphon SL stays snug to the head. The system however only around to the front of the ear rather than all the way around the helmet. The Boa Fit System is smooth and strong yet light weight.
Like many all mountain helmets, the Cyphon SL accepts goggles well and when worn properly, the fit system is still accessible while wearing goggles.
Conclusion:
The Cyphon SL helmet by Pro-Tec has all the right features to be a good all mountain helmet. We found access to the fitting knob to be a little limited, making adjusting the knob more difficult than it should have been. The fact that the Boa Fit System only reaches around to the ear area leaves us to wonder if the helmet could fit better as many other helmets in this price range synch around the whole circumference of the head. The helmet fit with goggles well and ventilation proved to be adequate. For the $109.95 price tag, the Cyphon SL fits and performs well.
Pro-Tec is always solid.
