A Czech mother has been charged with child abandonment in Castello Tesino, Italy, after leaving her four-year-old locked in a car to go skiing. A resort employee noticed the crying child locked in a parked car at the Ski Lagorai ski resort on Thursday, February 15. After unsuccessfully attempting to open the car door, the resort employee notified the local police.
Carabinieri and members of the military arrived to help out but were unable to unlock the car. They however managed to calm down the child and the decision was made to not smash the car window, which would have been the only way to free him, as it was deemed unsettling and potentially dangerous for the child.
The carabinieri managed to track down the mother by using public announcements on resort speakers and searching for her at lift turnstiles. The 40-year-old mother from Czechia justified the decision to leave her four-year-old son alone in the car to go skiing by stating that she had left her 13-year-old son behind as well to watch over him. The teenager apparently decided to go skiing as well, leaving his little brother unattended in the locked car.
The Czech mother has been reported to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Trento and is being charged with child abandonment.
