Report from Thursday, March 27, 2025

Echo Mountain Ski Area is located in Idaho Springs, Colorado, and is just 36 miles from Downtown Denver. Echo Mountain originally opened in 1960 as Squaw Pass Ski Area and was a popular skiing destination until 1973, when the Eisenhower Tunnel was built allowing easy access to the plentiful ski areas deeper in Coloradoโ€™s Rocky Mountains. Two years later in 1975, the ski area closed and sat quietly for 30 years, until it reopened as Echo Mountain Park.

Echo Mountain changed hands a couple of times before becoming the Echo Mountain we know today. Since 2016, Echo Mountain has expanded its operations to 7 days a week, renovating its kitchen and lodge, offering a tubing hill, and expanding the beginner area.

This past Thursday, I had the opportunity to ski it for the first time. It was a beautiful spring evening and the sun was starting to set when I got my first turns of the day in. The vibes were great and it was the perfect way to spend a night after a long day at work.

Echo Mountain is an upside-down ski area so the parking lot is right near the top of the main triple chairlift. After a few runs of spring slush, I stopped at the lodge for a burger and to watch the sun disappear behind the mountains. Echo Mountain wasnโ€™t kidding when it said the kitchen had been renovated, the burger was top-tier!

It has been a while since I last enjoyed turns under the lights. The snow stayed decently soft despite night setting in and the temperature dropping. Although Echo Mountain is often overlooked for its small size, it was so much fun lapping the same chair throughout the night and enjoying the empty mountain.

My first time at Echo Mountain was a blast, and I hope to get another day on the mountain before the season ends on April 16. There are still a couple of weeks left to enjoy some chill turns and great food. Back in 2022, Echo Mountain joined the Indy Pass, which offers two free lift passes to over 230 independent ski areas.
