There’s a new base area coming to Loon Mountain Resort, New Hampshire, this winter. The south peak expansion, named Timbertown, opens the door for some new terrain, and another base area for skiers and riders to utilize. The area is not necessarily new to Loon, as resort guests could go down the escape route trail to this area, but it was not serviced by any lifts. This winter, a dedicated chairlift and 11 new trails will be open for skiers and riders to enjoy. ย Servicing this new area is a brand new Doppelmayr Alpenstar 4-CLF chairlift.

The expansion is another step in Loonโ€™s Master Development Plan. The plan outlines expansions on other peaks as well, and some new chairlifts coming in to replace aging ones. The South Peak expansion was a late addition to the plan, and it is something that has been in the making for a long time. The plan hints at further development on that side of the mountain in the next few years.

So, what does this mean for you? This new area is right across the river from town, making access easier. Gone are the days of sitting in traffic for miles on main street, just to find out that the lift-serviced lots were full. Previously, skiers would be turned around and sent back to the escape route parking lot and have to be bussed from there to the main base, and this eliminates the headache of having to do so. The bottom line? Convenience, and a step closer to four concrete base areas.

Another benefit is the expansion of beginner terrain. According to Loon, the new terrain is phenomenal for beginners, with 60% of the trails being rated for beginners. ย South Peak houses some of the best terrain on the mountain, and now boasts a new learning ground for those who are new to the sport.

With opening day right around the corner, the expansion is likely close to completion. Keep an eye on the Loon Mountain website for details.
