Three British skiers were airlifted to safety on Wednesday, March 12, after recklessly venturing off-piste in the Albona ski area of Stuben, Austria, despite lacking local knowledge. Their ill-advised search for untracked runs led them into dangerously steep and rocky terrain, ultimately requiring an emergency helicopter rescue by Austrian authorities.
At approximately 12:55 p.m., the three British skiers aged between 55 and 68 were rescued after straying off marked slopes in the Albona ski area of Stuben, Austria. Seeking โgood snow,โ as they stated later to police, the trio ventured into unfamiliar, steep, and rocky terrain, ultimately finding themselves trapped above a vertical rock face. Unable to proceed or retreat safely, they contacted local rescue services for assistance.
The Vorarlberg police dispatched their โLibelleโ helicopter, whose crew executed a rope rescue to extricate the skiers from their precarious position. They were transported to a safe area within the ski resort. Citing gross negligence, authorities announced that the individuals would be responsible for covering the costs associated with their rescue.
This incident underscores the inherent dangers of off-piste skiing, particularly for those lacking local knowledge, equipment, and proper guidance. According to the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention, a significant majorityโ85%โof fatal snow sports accidents occur off marked trails. Between 2014 and 2023, Switzerland recorded an average of 34 winter sports-related deaths annually, with half attributed to avalanches. In Austria, this number is significantly lower, with on average 7 deaths per year in the 10-year period from 2014 to 2023.

Many ski resorts have introduced designated freeride zonesโmarked in yellowโto accommodate the growing interest in off-piste skiing. These areas are secured against avalanches but remain unprepared and unchecked, intended for experienced skiers and snowboarders. Venturing beyond these zones requires individuals to assess avalanche risks independently, underscoring the need for proper training and equipment.
