Report from February 3, 2024
Day One in Canada is always exciting; this year is no different, despite being a little soggy at Fernie in British Columbia. Last night, I flew to Kalispell to meet up with Jacob Heath (from Salt Lake City) and drive up to see a part of the Canadian Rockies we have yet to see.
Unfortunately, the coverage at Fernie was less than ideal. The off-piste conditions were very hard with only a light dusting from the snow that began to fall as we started the day. But some of the groomers were a surfy dust-on-crust situation. Shouts out to the grooming team for doing a wonderful job, despite challenging circumstances.
But Fernieโs terrain is incredibleโwith a stronger base, we definitely see why people rave about it. But today the mountainโs base intermittently received wet snow and rain. The upper sections enjoyed more consistent snow, but it was still unseasonably warm for February in Canada.
Because we knew we had a four-hour drive to Kicking Horse, we felt justified leaving Fernie a little after noon. We tried every lift, got a strong sense of what could be epic terrain, but did not feel like forcing it on sticky snow during day one of a long trip.
Going forward, Fernie is predicting a little bit of fresh snow to aid its base. For us, next up is Kicking Horse, which supposedly got a little colder version of the wet storm we saw today.
Looking forward to a first day at Kicking Horse tomorrow.
