IS THERE ANY SNOW IN TAHOE?????
——————————————————————————————————————————
Last week Kirkwood Mountain was graced with a freak massive amount of new snow of…wait for it…3 inches! Given the season so far, that 3 inch storm yields to one of the deepest powder days of the year! With a bluebird forecast the day after the major snow event, I rallied up to the mountain to see what I could find in and beyond the boundaries. Albeit with a firm layer underneath, those 3 inches definitely helped to allow for fun on the slopes with some pow slashing. I started the day on Wagon Wheel Bowl and encountered the fabled East wind. The good news? Well, that wind was depositing snow in a few select areas. My first plan of attack was to head past the Funnel Chute into Saddle Chute where I found some extremely decent turns.
My main objective of the day was to explore Broadway chute and possibly ski tour out to Peak 9795. After a lap in the chute, the East wind told me to go explore Thunder Saddle instead. To my luck, my usual stomping grounds between Vista and Thunder Saddle held the sheltered goods. The snow was definitely the best on the mountain by being smooth and fast.
After 4 weeks of being closed due to ‘hard snow,’ the Wall opened up so I had to check it out. After one turn off the cat track I realized why it was closed…frozen glacier moguls! Even with a massive firm layer below, I found pleasant turns in All the Way, The Ridge to Waterfall, and down the middle of the bowl of The Wall.
To finish out the day, I lapped Chair 6 by exploring Chamoix, Oops and Poops, Olympic and Lightning. I was astonished to find one solo track at 1pm on Oops, and zero tracks in the Olympic fun zone at 2pm.
On Sunday February 1st, I returned with my 3 year old daughter and was pleasantly surprised to find great morning groomers and gorgeous weather. After dropping her off for a ski lesson, I reunited with an old ski pal and we went exploring off Chair 6. As usual, we found the best turns in Chamoix, Oops and Olympic.
