In a tragic and rare incident, Italian surfer Giulia Manfrini was killed after being impaled by a swordfish while surfing off the coast of Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands. The 36-year-old adventurer and former professional snowboarder was struck in the chest when the fish unexpectedly leapt from the water on Friday.
She competed at elite levels as a professional snowboarder, inspiring a generation of young riders. Her style and fearless approach to big mountain riding earned her numerous accolades and a devoted following.
Manfrini discovered surfing during an off-season trip to Bali in her late twenties. The experience ignited a new passion that ultimately led her to co-found AWAVE Travel, a company specializing in surf and snowboard expeditions.
“It is with the deepest sadness that I have to announce the passing of Giulia Manfrini, one of AWAVE Travel’s co-founders.
Giulia was surfing in remote Indonesia and suffered a freak accident. Unfortunately, even with the brave efforts of her partner, local resort staff and doctors, Giulia couldn’t be saved. We believe she died doing what she loved, in a place that she loved.
Giulia was the lifeblood of this company and her infectious enthusiasm for surf, snow and life will be remembered by all that came in contact with her.
Giulia couldn’t travel without people falling in love with her smile, laugh and endless Stoke. Anyone was lucky to have her on board a charter or surf trip!
AWAVE Travel will still be operating and our team will be available to handle all ongoing trips.
We value your kind words, memories of Giulia and all that she leaves behind.
We love you Giulia. I am so sorry to say goodbye.

Local authorities reported that Manfrini suffered a two-inch deep wound to her chest from the swordfish attack. Despite immediate efforts to save her, including first aid from fellow surfers and transport to a nearby health clinic, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after the incident.
While swordfish attacks on humans are rare, they’re not unheard of in the region. In 2023, another Italian surfer survived a similar incident involving a needlefish off the coast of Sumbawa.
