Rock-climbing documentary Free Solo won seven Creative Arts Emmys in Los Angeles on Saturday night. The documentary, directed by husband and wife team Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, gives a unique insight into rock climber Alex Honnoldโs mindblowing quest to perform a free solo (no harness or safety ropes) ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, CA.
The film scored the honors for Outstanding Direction, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Picture Editing and Music Composition for a Non-Fiction Program, while a companion short film, Free Solo 360, won for Creative Achievement in Interactive Media Within an Unscripted Program. Back in February, the documentary won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
Since premiering to rave reviews at the Telluride Film Festival last fall, National Geographic’s โFree Soloโ has become one of the most successful documentaries of all time.
