On Tuesday, a group of Czech skiers was freeriding at Austria’s Hochfügen ski resort when an inbounds avalanche caught two of them, leaving one seriously hurt.
According to a press release from the Tyrol Police Department, the five-person group, including two guides, set out around 3:15 p.m. on December 10. They planned to ski the northeast slope below Waidoffen mountain station, taking turns to descend one by one.
The incident happened when the 51-year-old guide fell during his run. Another group member, 47, skied down to help when a slab of snow broke loose above them, sweeping both men about 100 feet (30 meters) downslope.
The 47-year-old ended up on top of the snow unharmed. However, the guide wasn’t as fortunate. He was partially buried and, although the group dug him out quickly, suffered serious injuries.
A rescue helicopter took the injured guide to Schwaz Hospital. The other four skiers walked away shaken but unhurt.
Hochfügen is part of the Hochzillertal-Hochfügen ski area. The resort spans elevations from 1,968 to 7,801 feet (600 to 2,378 meters) and offers 57 miles (91 kilometers) of terrain.
Known for its reliable snow conditions, Hochfügen attracts families and freeride enthusiasts. For beginners, the Onkeljoch area provides gentle slopes and four ski schools. More experienced skiers can enjoy challenging runs from Pfaffenbühel to the valley station. Freeriders will find ample opportunities, with eight freeride checkpoints at Pfaffenbühel and Marchkopf offering safety information and route guidance.
