A 26-year-old Italian man living in Switzerland died in a tragic freeriding accident on Tuesday, March 18, at Piz Corvatsch, a well-known ski area in the Swiss Alps. The skier was reported missing in the afternoon when he failed to arrive at a designated meeting point at the Corvatsch middle station.
His wife, growing concerned, alerted Rega, Switzerlandโs emergency air rescue service. A Rega search crew later located the man in steep, off-piste terrain, where he had fallen approximately 300 meters (1,000 feet) over rocky cliffs. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts upon recovery, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The operation involved Heli Bernina AG, the Graubรผnden cantonal police, and mountain rescuers from the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Located in Switzerlandโs Engadin Valley, Corvatsch is a premier ski destination known for its high-altitude slopes and extensive freeride terrain. The mountainโs 3,303-meter (10,837-foot) summit provides access to some of the longest and most challenging runs in the region, including off-piste routes that attract experienced skiers and snowboarders seeking deep powder and technical descents. The resort is part of the Engadin St. Moritz Ski Area which joined the IKON Pass last year. Ski areas in the Engadin St. Moritz Ski Area include: Corviglia/Piz Nair, Corvatsch/Furtschellas, Diavolezza/Lagalb, plus six smaller ski areas, Pontresina/Languard, Zuoz, Samedan, La Punt, Maloja, and S-Chanf. Corvatsch is currently hosting the Slopestyle and Halfpipe events of the 2025 World Championships while Corviglia is hosting the other Freestyle events except for the Big Air snowboard and ski races which are held at the old Olympic ski jump in the valley.
