On October 20, 2023, Japan kicked off its winter season. Continuing its 25-year-long streak, Fujiyama Snow Resort Yeti was the first ski resort to open in Japan.
The resort’s early start is no accident. The management team prides itself on its snowmaking ability. Each year, to retain its crown, the resort blows just enough snow to make a single track from top to bottom. The white ribbon of death may not be a world-class run, but it’s enough to entertain.
The first tracks of the season opened to a fanfare of balloons and some funky Japanese โCosplayโ. Skiers and boarders got into the mood by dressing up in costumes of their favorite anime characters. The subculture of dressing up as popular characters known as โCosplayโ has been slowly making its way from the streets of Akihabara to Japan’s mountains. Every year, more and more on-slope Cosplay events are held. They are a spectacle to see, as many Japanese go all out with their costumes.
Fujiyama Snow Resort Yeti is located in Susono City in Shizuoka Prefecture. At an altitude of 4856 ft (1,480 m), it offers beautiful views of Mount Fuji. Despite its small size, with only 5 runs and 492ft (150m) of vertical, it has something for everyone.

As the autumn season comes to a close, other major resorts such as Niseko, Hakuba, and Nozawa Onsen are also gearing up for winter. Many resorts have shut down their fall operations and have started prepping lifts and facilities for the coming snow.
Despite the steady decline of domestic skiers from a peak during the 1980s, the ski industry in Japan is still going strong. Popularity among international travelers has bolstered numbers and sustained the industry. Many resorts now offer international-friendly services such as English-speaking staff, lessons, and activities for the English market. Combined with renowned powder snow and unique cultural experiences, it’s no wonder that Japan is becoming a top winter destination.
The opening of Yeti Snow Park marks the start of Japan’s highly anticipated ski season. The season in Japan typically runs from December to May, with some resorts opening earlier if there is enough natural snowfall or if they have artificial snowmaking capabilities.
With a weak Yen and open borders, Japan will be a popular destination this year.
