There are a lot of different skis to choose from in the industryย andย findingย the skiย that isย best suited for you can be a challenge.ย Before the beginning of the season, I was looking to find one ski that I could use for the whole year. The goal was to find one pair of skis that Iย would be able toย use on all different terrain and in all weather conditions.ย Iย normallyย take two to three pairs of skis with me on every trip I take toย be able toย ski anything I wantย on the mountain.ย This year, the 2023/24ย Peak 98 All Mountain Ski by Bodeย was the only pair of skisย that Iย clicked into all season.
Peak Skisย was foundedย by former pro skierย Bode Millerย and big mountain skier and mountaineerย Chris Davenportย in 2022.ย The reasonย I chose the Peakย 98sย was because I skiย mostlyย in the Northeastย whichย is known for being icy and where the snow conditions can change by the hour.ย I also wanted a pair of skis that I could depend on in the spring when the snowpack is heavy and not worry about getting stuck in mashed potatoes or catching an edge.ย

According to Peak Skis, the Peak 98 is the model that 80 percent of skiers shouldย be pilotingย 80 percent of the time.ย If 80 percent of skiers should be hitting slopes on the Peak 98’s 80 percent of the timeย itย must mean that those skis can handle almost any conditions. It also means that most skiers would go to the Peak 98’s as their choice of ski throughout the season. I would not recommend them for skiers who only ski oneย type of terrain. People who only hit the backcountry or the park should get skisย thatย areย specifically designedย for that type of terrain.ย
This past seasonย Iย hit resorts in New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and the West Coast and never had an issue with theย performance of the skiย at all. I skied on powder, ice, hard-packed groomers, glades, moguls, chutes, andย bowls, and I even tried them out in a terrain park and hit someย smallย features.ย The Peakย 98sย handled allย of those conditionsย andย itย gave me the confidence that I could go through anything.
Construction
The Peak 98 features a paulownia/ash wood coreย thatโsย in between two layers of titanal metal.ย The bottom layer of titanal does not span sidewall-to-sidewall, but the upper layer does.ย Peakโsย proprietary KeyHole Technology™ is an oval cutaway in the upper layer of an alloy of every Peak Ski by Bode Miller. It is designed for the ski to perform easier to vary turn shapes because of that forgiving forebody.ย Off-trail, the KeyHole™ allows the reduction of the sidecut ofย Peak’sย wider skisย whichย makes the skis track better in soft, crusted, and unconsolidatedย backcountryย snow.
Shape & Rocker Profile
The Peakย 98ย shape and rocker profile are similar to other models in the industry for All Mountain Skis.ย The tips and tails have aย smallย tapering, but not too much, and the tips and tailsย are squared offย past the widest points.ย The Peak 98 has a deep tip rocker line for its width, a 7mm underfoot camber, andย its tail rocker line is much shallower.ย What I noticed about the Peakย 98sย while on the mountain is that the front of the skis seem softerย andย the backย of the skisย are much stronger than the front. Although the tip and front of the ski seemย to beย softer, it still has enough powerย to not chatterย when hitting chunks or carving on hard-pack groomers. It also has enough flex when I want to hit bumps andย go hitย some powder in theย glades.ย
Sidecut Radius
The 168-centimeter Peakย 98ย has a 25-meter sidecut radiusย whichย might make you think that it is hard to make short and fast turns.ย ย “While KeyHole Technology™ lets us elongate the radius by multiple metersย โon paper,โย in reality, our skis execute easy short-swing turns too. But when you take them off-trail in powder, crust, and crud,ย thereโsย less of thatย โhookyโย hourglass shaping that wants to turn when youย donโt,”ย Peak states on its website.ย I had no problems making quick turns in bumpsย or hittingย the gladesย andย navigating through tight spots.ย
Mount Point
The Peakย 98’sย recommended mount point for bindings is -10 centimeters fromย trueย center, which allows the ski to float through powder and crud.ย I skiedย a lot ofย days this season in heavyย wetย snow and evenย timesย when it was raining pretty hardย andย the Peakย 98sย had no problem handling the conditions.ย Even though the mount point is behind trueย centerย it did not affect my ability to initiate turns.ย
Who Should Grab a Pair of Peakย 98ย All-Mountain Skis
Theย simplestย answer to this is anyone. The Peakย 98sย areย a greatย option for skiers of any skill level.ย Being an East Coast skier, I found them toย handle all the conditions thatย I skied on this seasonย with ease.ย Iย did tendย to be more forward in my stance this seasonย whichย isย due to the mounting point.ย It has the versatility to hit almost any type of condition on the mountain.ย For those who get nervous skiing on ice, I skied on a lot of ice this seasonย andย Iย never lost an edgeย evenย on steep terrain. The Peak 98s rip on groomers and I never felt like I was pushing the ski past its limits.ย
Every skier has their preferences with what type of terrain they like toย skiย whether itย beย bumps, glades, groomers, etc.ย If you only ski oneย typeย of terrain,ย thenย I would get the skiย that isย designed specifically for that.ย If you are looking for a ski that will do well in most conditions, then the Peak 98 is a great choice.ย
