Italian speed specialist Sofia Goggia broke her leg during training today, Monday, February 5, 2024, on the Casola Nera run in the Ponte di Legno Tonale ski area in Italy. La Regina della Velocita, The Queen of Speed, got her inside ski caught in a gate on a right turn while training for the World Cup in Soldeu, Andorra, sending the ski racer flying. Goggia was on her third training run when the accident happened. The Italian ski association โFISIโ later confirmed that the ski racer had fractured her right leg.
According to the press release by FISI, Goggia received surgery on her leg today at the La Madonnina Clinic in Milan. Her surgeons, Dr. Andrea Panzeri and Dr. Riccardo Accetta confirmed that the skier had fractured her tibia in several places and the leg had to be set with a rod and seven screws. Goggia will commence physiotherapy as soon as possible and is vowing to come back stronger
โAnother injury that interrupts my run-up to a new downhill World Cup, but again I will be able to come back from this.โ

It is not Goggiaโs first serious injury: the 31-year-old skier has torn her ACL several times in both knees, fractured her tibial plateau more than once, fractured the fibular malleolus, suffered a compound radius fracture of the left arm, fracturered her fibula, and last season famously fractured her hand during a race, however, still finished the Downhill in second place, and then returned the next day with a freshly operated hand to win the second Downhill race at St. Moritz, Switzerland.

We are sure, Sofia Goggia will come back from this injury, but it has been a very tough season this years with many of the worldโs best skiers suffering season ending injuries. We wish her a speedy recovery!
That’s one more, in a long line, of WC’s top racers going down this season. Best to all of them and best wishes for complete recoveries.
