The summer-only ski resort Passo Stelvio in Italy has postponed its opening date to June 6, 2024. The season opening, which had initially been moved forward from June 1 to May 31, has now been moved back by a week as the road is not safe at this point in time for cars. Crews have been clearing the road since April, but persistent snowfalls in April and May have meant thatย the avalanche danger on the mountain pass is currently simply too high, which also resulted in the cancellation of the famous Giro dโ€™Italia traveling along the Italian pass road. The pass is typically the highlight of the Giro dโ€™Italia, reaching a staggering 2,757 meters (9,045 feet) above sea level.

The ski area is located along the Stelvio Pass, which connects the Upper Valtellina with South Tyrol. The resort isย the largest summer skiing area in the European Alps and offers skiing from 9,049 ft (2,758m) to 11,319 ft (3,450m) andย spanning over 12.4 miles (20km) of groomed slopes. With nine lifts and 34 runs, skiers can enjoy a variety of thrilling descents against the backdrop of the majestic Alps.
