Kami Rita Sherpa from Nepal climbed Mount Everest for the 29th time on Sunday, May 12, 2024, beating the record for the most times for an individual to have climbed Everest set by himself in May last year. The 54-year-old Nepal-native conquered the highest mountain above sea level twice last May, once on May 17 and then again less than a week later on May 23. Kami Rita is a Senior Guide with 14 Peaks Expeditions and Seven Summit Treks.

Kami Rita Sherpa first climbed Mount Everest in 1994 and since then climbed it almost every year, except in 2014, 2015, and 2020, when climbing was not possible. In 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2019 he climbed the legendary peak twice in the short May window. He has been breaking his own record since 2018, when he broke the world record of then 22 ascents, earning him the nickname โ€˜Everest Manโ€™.

Also reaching the 8,849 meter (29,032 feet) peak on Sunday was British climber Kenton Cool who now has 18 Everest climbs to his name, the most for a foreign climber. Like Kami Rita, Cool also beat his own record. The 50-year-old British climber is an International Federation of Mountain Guides Association (IFMGA) qualified mountain guide and both he and Kama Rita Sherpa were guiding clients on separate expeditions at the time of their record-setting feat.
