Kelly Slater’s broken foot today via his instagram.

Kelly Slater just broke his foot free surfing on a lay day of the Jefferey’s Bay World Surf League tour stop. ย This was 45-year-old Slater’s first ever real injury as far as we know.

Initially, he was thinking it would be a 6-week recovery.

“Kinda like smashing my foot with a big hammer as hard as I can. Sorta feels like I’m giving birth out of my foot right now! I‘m guessing surgery and 6 week holiday is in order.” – Kelly Slater, on Monday

Now, it’s looking more like it’ll be a 4-6 month recovery, which means he’ll most likely miss the entire rest of the World Surf League season that ends in December.

“The challenge will be healing with awareness, patience and good health. Hopefully ill have some tips to share from my process for any future mishaps you might have. And a huge thanks to all my friends and acquaintances who assisted me yesterday. Not one of the better days in recent memory. It’s hard to believe I could do this just yesterday. I can’t even touch my foot right now. I’ll find out next week but prognosis is now looking like 4-6 months recovery.” – Kelly Slater, today

Last year, after hist buddy John John Florence won his first title, Slater said this:

โ€œI think I’m going to take one more stab at a title next year and really try to put a year together. I’m pretty inspired by what panned out this year in the back half. So I’m going to take these next four months, get my body together, and get my motivation and my boards and everything right and see if I can really put together a focused year.” – Kelly Slater, last year

We’re hoping that since Slater was injured this year and is likely out for the season, that he’ll give the title one more shot in 2018. ย

You got this, Kelly!
