We were met with cold temperatures and blue skies on our fourth stop of the Powder Highway. Perfect for scouting out lines and getting a lay of Kicking Horse Mountain as it is steep and the runs are long. Kicking horse had received 8cm a few days earlier mixed with a little wind which actually helped make some areas fill in with more like 16cm.
Most of BC has been in a little bit of a drought for snow in the last two weeks so it was a welcome change to find boot top powder in some areas as well as soft bumps. You have to venture a little further to find it and think about wind direction but it was well worth it.
We asked one of the Ski patrollers for where to go next and he suggested hiking Terminator 1 ridge and going straight off the back. The wind had blown more snow over this side plus we had the sun shining straight on the face.
We finished the day with a late lunch at the Eagles Eye Restaurant. Such an incredible view and the highest dining experience in Canada. Drinking Caesar’s and eating delicious food at 7,700 feet is sure a treat. Only problem is skiing the long vertical down to the bottom with a full stomach and tired legs from a great days skiing.
So kicking horse is definitely worth a visit if you like steep and challenging runs. It is also a place that reports less snow than what they actually receive. The owner of ย the place we stayed at Canyon Ridge Lodge, said depending on the wind they will often get double what the snow report says. Good to know!
Next stop, Revelstoke and a change in the weather! A storm is coming!
