Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has powder. ‘Nough said. During a week that has seen a pineapple express decimate ski hills all over BC and Washington, you don’t have to say much to sell a resort. The fact that we are skiing makes KHMR a destination. I don’t even need to bring up the 40cm we’ve had in the last 24hrs, but because my parents told me to share, I will. February 6th and 7th have been the deepest days of the year and they’ve come just when people had lost hope in the winter.
To start, there is a definite freezing level sitting at the top of Catamount chair at the base of the mountain. Friday saw rain and Saturday enjoyed soft groomers to end your top to bottom 4000 ft runs. Mid mountain is heavy pow but there are plenty of groomed runs to keep you out of the Whistler snot. The upper mountain, containing all the chutes and steeps, has been getting nuked on for days; 60cm in 48 hours to be precise. Although it is heavier than the normal champagne we are used to I don’t think you will find anyone complaining.
Due to avalanche control efforts, zones have been slow to open. Bowl over, CPR, Fuez bowl has been the order the last two days. Things are staying fresh because of this. If you are keeping tabs, Whitewall, Terminator South, Super Bowl and T2 are all sitting primed and un-skied with over 60cm waiting. Boo-yah. If you are not here you have some serious life decisions to reconsider.
Kinda like Japan but at home
