Trail running enthusiasts and adventure seekers from around the globe are eagerly anticipating the debut of the Kilimanjaro Peak Ultra (KPU) in October 2025. Organized by the PLAN B Event Company in partnership with Elia Safaris, this event is poised to redefine the limits of endurance and adventure, offering an unparalleled challenge against the backdrop of Africaโ€™s tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

Standing at an impressive 1,9340 feet (5,895 meters) above sea level, Kilimanjaro is not only Africaโ€™s highest peak but also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Its prominence among the Seven Summits makes it a coveted destination for mountaineers and trail runners alike. The Kilimanjaro Peak Ultra provides a unique opportunity to tackle this iconic summit in a single, continuous trail running competition.

The KPU course is designed to be both a rigorous test of endurance and a celebration and honoring of the mountain’s stunning natural beauty. Spanning approximately 42 miles (68 kilometers), the race follows the Marangu route, known for being the most popular and comparatively accessible path to Kilimanjaroโ€™s summit. This route starts at Marangu Gate, one of the primary entry points to the Kilimanjaro National Park, ascends to the summit of Uhuru Peak, and then descends back to the starting point.

The race features a formidable elevation gain of 13,451 feet (4,100 meters), which presents a significant challenge to participants. As runners ascend through the various climatic zones of Kilimanjaro, they will traverse lush rainforests, alpine meadows, and arid desert-like conditions near the summit. Each section of the course offers its own set of challenges and rewards, immersing competitors in the diverse and dramatic landscapes that define the illustrious Kilimanjaro.

In addition to the physical demands, the Kilimanjaro Peak Ultra promises to deliver an unforgettable experience. Runners will be treated to breathtaking vistas, sweeping panoramas of the surrounding African landscape, and the opportunity to witness Kilimanjaroโ€™s rich biodiversity up close. The combination of high-altitude terrain and extraordinary scenery ensures that the race will be both a profound personal challenge and a visually stunning once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

To ensure a successful and safe event, the KPU will offer comprehensive support to participants. Aid stations will be strategically placed along the course to provide essential hydration, nutrition, and medical assistance. Additionally, runners will benefit from detailed pre-race briefings and acclimatization programs designed to prepare them for the unique demands of high-altitude trail running.

Registration for the Kilimanjaro Peak Ultra will open on January 1, 2025. Prospective participants are encouraged to sign up for the newsletter to receive regular updates and detailed information about the event. By participating in this historic race, runners will not only challenge their physical and mental limits but also contribute to the broader impact of the event. A portion of the proceeds will support local conservation initiatives and community development projects, ensuring that the benefits of this monumental challenge extend beyond the individual runners and positively impact the environment and communities surrounding Kilimanjaro.

As the launch date approaches, the Kilimanjaro Peak Ultra is set to become a landmark event in the trail running calendar, blending extreme physical demands with the awe-inspiring beauty of one of the worldโ€™s most majestic mountains. This event offers a rare and remarkable opportunity to engage with Kilimanjaroโ€™s legendary landscape and to achieve a trail running milestone that will be remembered for years to come.
