Report from March 9, 2024
We got back out there again today.
I was exhausted.
We encountered many challenges just getting to spots we wanted to ski.
Only one location was available to us and it was one we’d never skied.
Well, at least Garrett & I hadn’t.
We skinned up through trees being thrashed by the wind.
We switched to boots and crampons as the wind was keeping the snow firm.
We were in search of corn snow chutes but the wind had other ideas…
Fortunately, after booting up for only a few minutes we found softer snow.
The chute was more protected from the wind and the corn was softening nicely.
Well, it wasn’t exactly corn but it was on its way to being maize.
The chute suddenly forked.
Garrett and Fox went left.
I went right.
None of us had skied the right option so I thought I’d have a look.
It was slender, uncouth, and frighteningly elegant.
Twists and turns and trees and bushes and mini-straight lines and firm snow and soft snow.
I barely pulled off skiing the chute after getting on one ski via mini-tree assist on the mini-straight line.
Fox & Garrett enjoyed their chute and we switched.
I for theirs and they for mine.
We ended up calling these two chutes “Pinky & The Brain” with The Brain being that convoluted one that I skied first.
Pinky skied great and then we met up and headed home.
It was nice to have a smaller day.
Only 2K vert versus yesterday’s 4.5K vert.
We hit Front Street Pizza apres ski and the Spicy Thai Chicken slice was insanely good.
I even went to the grocery store which I am normally loath to do…
Great, unexpected, go-with-the-flow day.
Thanks, California!
