Indonesia itself is magical place. The isle of Lombok is no exception. It’s changing fast however. If you want to see it mostly undisturbed by major development, it’s time to come now. The Emirates are building a large hotel near Kuta, Lombok and things are happening quick. They already built a new airport and they’ve begun paving all the roads. It’s getting busy here, but it’s not too bad yet. The hotel is a large project and it’ll be awhile before it’s finished.
The past week, the surf spot at Mawi has been working well. It’s been head high each day of the week and slowly getting less consistent each day. The right has been great near low tide and left has been doing it’s thing through most every tide.
Today was the smallest, least consistent day this week. A swell long period swell is supposed to arrive tomorrow. We’ll see.
Culturally, this place is on fire. On the way home from surfing a couple days ago a wedding had taken over the road. I stopped and joined in and was blown away by the happiness tradition. It was a traditional Sasak (local Lombok culture) wedding in muslim style. Simply unreal.
Weekly markets also pop up and take over the road to the surf spot on occasion. Very cool to see how people get their foodstuffs here.
Kuta itself has been busy and the food has been amazing. Warung Aldi doubled in size, got fancy, raised the prices a bit, and the food might be even better than before. Warung Java 1 is has a spicier, grittier taste that can’t be ignored. I haven’t been able to eat anywhere else. Spectacular food.
Hopefully the surf will pick up a bit more and we’ll encounter a bit more interesting culture this week.
