Report from Friday, February 21, 2025

Loveland Ski Area sits atop the Continental Divide in the heart of Coloradoโ€™s Rocky Mountains. It also happens to be located in the heart of a week-long storm that has dropped 50โ€ณ of snow since last Saturday. The recent snowfall has absolutely boosted the ski areaโ€™s base, and I was lucky to get a day out there on Friday.

I woke to Loveland Ski Areaโ€™s snow stake cam reading a fresh 10โ€ณ. I hopped in the truck and sent it up I-70, itching to get a taste of the storm that had blanketed the mountain. Conditions looked great; the snowfall had let up by 7 a.m., and the skies were clearing.

I started at Chetโ€™s Dream, where I hit a couple of warm-up laps in blower pow. The spirits were high, and for many people I rode the lifts with today, it was their third or fourth day of skiing the storm.

As the other lifts began spinning, I chased the fresh tracks and ended up at Lift 8. Lift 8 has a special place in my heart since it was the lift I rode for some of my first-ever pow laps. I revisited my favorite runs off this lift and lapped The Plunge, a north-facing slope that held incredible snow today.

A few laps later, I noticed some tracks being set off Lift 9. With access to several terrific bowls and the infamous Ridge Cat, Lift 9 is one of my favorite lifts. The turns from the ridge were epic, and on my second lap, I was able to catch the Ridge Cat, Lovelandโ€™s snowcat that traverses part of the ski areaโ€™s iconic ridge.

The snowcat operator dropped us off at Velvet Hammer for some untouched turns. The next four hours were spent lapping Lift 9 until my quads couldnโ€™t handle it anymore. There didnโ€™t seem to be a bad run today, and the snow stayed deep and playful until close.

At the beginning of the day, one of the lifties said, โ€œItโ€™s going to be the best day of the season.โ€ I canโ€™t speak for the entirety of the season, but it seemed like it couldnโ€™t get much better than today. 12โ€ณ of fresh snow on top of a deep week of snow, low winds, and great visibility. I love Loveland and am already stoked to get back there. As of October 2024, Loveland Ski Area is officially part of the Indy Pass, which offers two lift passes to over 230 independent ski areas.
