A magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit Japan’s west coast on the main island, Honshu, on New Year’s Day at 4:10 p.m. local time near the Ishikawa prefecture.
The earthquake was felt in the entire central part of Honshu, Japan’s largest island, which is home to ski resorts in the Nagano prefecture like Hakuba.
Following the earthquake, between 15-20 aftershocks have been registered of magnitudes higher than 2 on the Richter scale, depending on affected regions.
There is a Tsunami warning in place and coastal areas are being evacuated.
The first tsunami waves have arrived on the west coast of Japan, measuring up to 1m (3.3 feet) but, the meteorological agency is expecting Tsunami waves of up to 5m (16.4 feet) height in the coming hours.
Large parts of the coast have received evacuation orders.
Some areas experienced fires, blackouts, and burst water pipes.
Several major roads in the west of the island had to be closed due to cracks and other damage.
It is the strongest earthquake in more than four decades to have struck Japan.
Thus far, four people have been confirmed dead.
