Report from Cinco de Mayo, 2023
Brought to you by Mammoth Mountain
We got out early to Mammoth Mountain, CA today.
We waited starting at 8:20am at Chair 2.
It was cold.
We shivered and complained.
Windy.
Chair 2 opened at 8:50am and we got blasted by wind and fog on the way up.
The groomer skiing was great.
We arrived at the bottom slightly warmed by the skiing and jump back on Chair 2.
On the way up, we discussed our plan.
It was too cold to continue in this pattern.
Trevor and I have only really spent time in Mammoth in the spring when operations are awesome but limited to:
- Chair 1
- Chair 2
- Chair 3
- Chair 23
- Gondola
This weekend, Mammoth had a helluva lot more than that open due to all the snow and above-average interest for this time of year.
We followed Dwanis down to Chair 4, then Chair 17, then Chair 8, then Chair 15.
My head was spinning.
This place is enormous and we were just scratching the surface.
The Canyon side of the mountain was much warmer, less windy, and more sunny.
We stayed there.
We goofed off and even rode the Village Ski back Run to the village to get a margarita and tacos but Gomez wasn’t yet open at 11am.
We thought they shoulda been – especially on Cinco de Mayo…
We took the village gondola for my first time ever and cruiesd back to Canyon Lodge and continued our voyage.
We skied a bit more then ended it on a Chair 5 lap.
Too fun.
After this goofy fun day, we ate, took a nap, then went backcountry skiing on Earthquake Dome in town.
But, that is a tale for another time – or at least for another article:
Thanks, Mammoth!
