Report from November 30-December 1
Mammoth Mountain, California, has seen one of the heaviest snowfalls in over a decade. The conditions look great, with a thick, heavy, “Sierra cement” base and pockets of powder everywhere. Mammoth, known for its outstandingly long seasons, has just had a great kickoff to the season with a base of about 39 inches and more snow on the horizon.
On Saturday, November 30, the snow was soft, especially in runs off the top of the mountain, including Paranoids, Dragon’s Tail, and Dave’s Run, which all had especially memorable snow. It was quite sunny and warm, with a slight breeze, making it a perfect bluebird ski day. Clear skies lasted throughout the day, and the fresh groomers added a nice touch to the day.

Mammoth has had an amazing few days, with approximately 48 inches, during this past week. The resort was able to open all three of its lodges and 170 of 178 trails. “Really, really awesome,” Jordan Bauer, Mammoth Mountain Big Mountain Freeride coach, said about the conditions. “Now we have good coverage and good terrain; the base was wet and heavy, perfect for the rest of the season,” coach Jordan added.
On Sunday, December 1, the snow was relatively similar to Saturday, but around noon, the weather started to cloud up, and even a very light snowfall started to happen. The light started diminishing, but the snow remained soft, packed powder. Over the whole mountain, especially in the Paranoids, there were pockets of powder and wind buff to enjoy. Another particularly fun run was Climax, a super long run filled with packed powder and slight bumps.
Overall, this weekend was a wonderful way to endย Thanksgiving Break at Mammoth Mountain. The forecast predicts sun for the rest of this week, with snow coming farther down the line, maybe mid-month. This week, it looks like bright sunshine and warm weather. With its incredible start to the winter andย enormous amount of snowfall, the season is looking bright!
