“Storm system with snow 10/17-10/18 for Intermountain West, Aurora Borealis, wildfire smoke forecast, jet stream and precipitation forecast through 10/20.”
Video Summary:
The upcoming weather pattern shows signs of changing after weeks of abnormally warm and dry conditions across much of the western United States and Canada. While the immediate forecast remains relatively quiet, a more active pattern will develop around October 17-18.
A small storm system is moving into the West but will likely dissipate due to high pressure. However, a more significant storm is anticipated to impact the Inner Mountain West around October 17-18. This system is expected to bring rain and snow to the region, with snowfall likely across many high peaks.
The jet stream pattern is shifting, allowing for a more active weather pattern across the Northern Tier states and parts of the Inner Mountain West in the extended forecast. Locations like Jackson Hole, Wyoming, are showing increased chances for snow accumulation between October 17 and 26.
British Columbia is favored for precipitation in the short term, but the upcoming storm around October 17-18 should bring some much-needed moisture to areas further south. While snowfall amounts are not expected to be incredibly heavy, it marks a positive change from the recent dry spell.
Areas that may see some snowfall include the high elevations of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and the Pacific Northwest. The Canadian ski resorts in British Columbia will also likely benefit from this pattern change.
This could signal the start of a more favorable pattern for early-season snow accumulation across western North America.
