Report from December 16-17, 2024
Deciding to send it to Bend, Oregon, for the tail-end of the most recent PNW storm system at Mt. Bachelor was the right call. It is amazing to have access to such an impressive playground just a three-hour drive or 25-minute flight from my home base in Portland, Oregon. Leaving Portland, I couldnโt help but be glad to bypass Mount Hood in favor of the central Oregon slopes of Mt. Bachelor.
Monday was a fantastic day to be skiing in Bend. Especially for my friend (and photographer) Jardon, who made the rush trip after finishing his final exams on Friday to join for his birthday.
After receiving more than a foot of snow over the weekend, the six inches that fell overnight on Sunday made Mt. Bachelor feel like a full winter paradise. Lifts were spinning the whole way around the mountain, from Cloudchaser to Northwest. We also took laps on Skyliner, Pine Marten, and Outback, but we spent most of our day on Northwest.
The top section of Northwest can be harrowing, but the trees below are worth the peril. Several laps in the West Bowls had us feeling positively jolly. The liftline was in the best shape I have seen it since 2023.
Mt. Bachelor is truly on track for a sensational year. The base is already mid-season deep.
