This new movie by the Powderwhores looks stunning. It seems to capture the excitement and fear of exploration into many of North Americaโs mountainous territories.
Weโre always excited to see what these guyโs come up with. They have a low budget and rarely use helicopters, yet always seem to produce breathtaking movies in the true spirit of backcountry travel. Even with this in mind, they still manage to ski gnarly lines in AKโฆ you just know that, somehow, โthat guyโ climbed all the way to the top of that gnarly spine face heโs skiing in the movie.

Hereโs what the Powderwhores have to say about ELEVATION:
โWith this resurgence into the backcountry we look for real adventure beyond the tightly wound, firmly stretched orange and black ropes that โprotectโ us from knowing freedom.โ

โThe backcountry is the imagination unleashed and you get out what you put in. There are real boundaries and limitations though; avalanches, exposure to the elements, conditions and fatigue all challenge one to grow in knowledge, patience and fitness. The joy comes in discovering these limitations, moving through fear and exploring beyond. Putting in the perspiration and inspiration leads to ELEVATION.โ

โThis movie is part ski porn, part documentary and a full on propaganda piece promoting the joys and wonder of exploring on skis and split-board. What we lack in flashy graphics, hi-tech camera gear and helicopter budgets, we make up for with a try-hard demeanor. Capturing wild mountains and those willing to put in the time, education, respect and energy that they demand is our pleasure.โ
The movie line-up:
โHolden Village, a peaceful Lutheran retreat deep in the Cascades, hosts Michele Manning and a wayward band of skiers who discover its powdery blessings from above
โThe Dorais brothers, Jason and Andy, attempt speed skiing records on the Grand Teton and Mount Rainier
โAndrew McLean explores true expedition life in the Ruth Gorge of Alaska
โReturning to health, Noah Howell reveals the depths of his season
โJake Sakson and Paul Kimbrough clean house in their backyard range, the Tetons of Wyoming
โWill Cardamone and Charlie Cannon hole up for turns in a hut deep in Oregonโs Wallowa Mountains
โBob Athey offers up crusty bits of wisdom gathered from decades of being bitter in the backcountry
โCindi-Lou and Zach Grant build the cabin of their dreams in the heart of the Wasatch Mtns
โThe Provo brothers, Neil and Ian, reign supreme in the Tordrillo Mountains proving once again that Alaska is the undisputed king of big lines and deep powder
Looks $$$.
I dig the idea, but thereโs no need to be negative about ski resorts. They fuel our industry and every person in this video got good at skiing at a ski resort.
You just canโt get good at skiing only skiing bc, itโs not enough funs. Practice makes perfect.
