Report from February 4, 2024
Nubs Nob is located about 90 minutes from Traverse City, Michigan. An independent resort with 427 vertical feet, 248 acres, eight chairlifts, and 315 snowmaking guns, itโs one of the best local hills in Michigan.
If you have your own equipment, there is even a free beginners area.
Skiing
After parking, it was a short walk to Green Lift which goes to the top of the first of three hills. There were a few race events going on from training to weekend races. No waits at lifts which was great for a Sunday in February.
As a resort guest, there were great areas to watch such as off of the JB Arena Rope Tow. This area was specifically blocked off for racing but still had some glades with natural snow cover off to skiers left (Arena Glades). It was a bit icy with the warm temperatures, but hopefully the forecast for natural snow will change.
I then went to explore Pintail Peak, the farthest area skiers left. There were some great Michigan blues and blacks under the Black Lift. The facilities and newer building at the top were nice for a break, food, and a fireplace.
I then explored the Orange and Brown Lifts to finish the day.
The small crowd had quite a few diehard skiers. Some had even left for a seven-hour drive at 1 a.m. that morning to ski all day. You can really feel the passion people have for the sport from the energy in their voices. With many options within a seven-hour drive range, it is no surprise these skiers picked Nubs Nob.
The resort had surprisingly much more natural snow than surrounding resorts I visited this weekend to cap off every resort in the mitten. Most resorts were barren in the trees, but here it was skiable with good coverage.
This is likely due to the location with great views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding Highlands at Harbor Springs.
Overall a great experience at Michiganโs local hill. Thanks, Nubs Nob!
