Report from 15-18 July, 2024
A bubble of practically uninterrupted bluebird conditions has made its comfy home at Ohau Snow Fields.ย
The Snow Fieldโs current remarkable combo of sun-plus calm is a tale of one mighty strong inversion layer, equating to two wildly different worlds.
At lake level elevation, New Zealandโs Mackenzie Country has shivered through a magnificently intense hoar frost.
Everywhere and on every surface, Winter is growing a crystal version of AstroTurf. There is nothing to shovel, yet the whole world is white, and photographers far and wide have been scrambling to document it.
Meanwhile, near at hand but worlds apart, Ohau has maintained as the go-to access for skiing, snowboarding, and sunshine, too.
The Snow Field access road is an escalator to an overlook of a cloud ocean.
Thereโs barely been any sign of the valley floor or lake, just jagged peaks covered in a sun-pressed snowpack.
Early birds are not necessarily getting the worms these days because the sun requires a fair bit of the morning to work its magic.
Itโs been enjoyable and for a solid week at least.
Snow levels are holding marvelously since the last storm event, so coverage is decent to downright great.
The Ace Card has been thanks to the air current, or lack thereof. The persistent calm has made the super surface at Ohau soft enough to be quickly and happily workable most days.
Beyond that, ridge access has been fully open and without limitation. The carpark BBQ is cranking. And every man, Jack, and their dog has a smile spread wide between the ears.
In lieu of fresh snow, weโll gladly take days like these ๐
