Report from March 6, 2024
After skiing in the backcountry for 10 of the past 12 days, it was time to return to Palisades Tahoe today.
I want to take a tour and see how filled in everything was.
Palisades Tahoe has now seen 323″ of snowfall this season after the big 102″ storm last week.
The storm dropped 102″ and delivered winds up to 190mph and it closed the ski resorts for 3 whole days:ย Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Right off the bat, we got word that the Palisades would open.
We rode up Siberia and hiked up.
The Chimney wasn’t quite good enough to open but the rest opened and the snow was OK up there.
The Palisades were more filled in but not by a ton.
The wind was blowing up to 190mph during the storm and things filled in in bizarre ways.
The cliffs on Mainline Pocket actually got stripped.
You could still see old landing tracks below the cliffs and they were all raised via the scorching wind.
Granite Chief Peak looked pretty filled in and had some large avalanches on it and it didn’t open right away.
From there we went back down to KT-22 where the skiing was the best we thought.
Chalky, wind-buffed snow.
Most of the mountain that we skied was some version of this:ย chalky, wind-buffed snow.
We did hear tell that Estelle Bowl over at Alpine was good today.
It was very nice to not hike and ski a lot today.
Groomers never felt so good ๐
Thanks, California!
