Easter is going to be white on the soutside of the European Alps, with a cold front sweeping in from the south of Europe since Tuesday, March 26. In the last 24 hours, the cold front brought around 36-48 centimeters (14-19 inches) of snow to resorts in the south of Switzerland, like Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Corvatsch, and Airolo, in Switzerland, and the Italian dolomites like Val di Fassa, Alta Badia, Corvara, Val Gardenia, and Cervinia. The storm is anticipated to bring possibly up to 2 meters (>80 inches) of snow in total.

From Good Friday until Easter Monday, partly heavy rain will occur in lower areas with between 100-200mm of precipitation forecast. The snowline is expected to fluctuate between 1,500-2,000 meters (4,921-6,562 feet), with the most precipitation falling between the Simplon’s south side at Via Maggia to the Verzasca valley. Lower areas are anticipated to be at danger of floods, mudslides, and landslides.

Please be mindful that the recent snowfalls can mean that there will be some changes to operating hours over the Easter long-weekend. The ski resort Airolo, Switzerland, announced that it will be closed tomorrow due to high avalanche danger. The planned Early-Bird Easter Monday skiing at Corvatsch, Switzerland, had to be canceled due to weather forecast.
