The top mountain bikers from around the world are converging in the desert town of Virgin, Utah today for the Red Bull Rampage. This year marks the 11th edition of ย the Red Bull Rampage, one of the biggest mountain biking events of the year.
Competitors are judged on their choice of line, execution, and the complexity of their tricks – much like a snowboarding or freestyle skiing event. The initial event had a prize purse back in 2001 of $8,000. Over the years that number has climbed significantly with last year’s winner taking home a respectable $100,000.
Each of the riders have remarkable skills, thrilling tricks, and nerves of steel. It is an astonishing spectacle of mind over matter as they hurl their bikes over the rugged, unforgiving terrain near Zion National Park toward the finish line. In this year’s line up of 21 invited riders, five are Americans, seven from Canada, three from France and the rest from New Zealand, Spain, Germany and England. Last year’s winner was Kurt Sorge of Canada. Top American rider, Cameron Zink, finished last year in 6th place, however he won the event back in 2010. He’s also ripped huge runs taking the prize for Best Trick in 2012 and 2013.
In case you missed today’s event, NBC will offer special coverage of this competition on Saturday, November 12, 2016.
