Reno, Nevada, has just set a record for the lowest August temperature ever recorded. The previous August record of 58ยฐF, which has been the record since 1904, was broken by the high of 57ยฐF recorded by the Reno-Tahoe Airport on Saturday. The National Weather Service states that a powerful upper-level trough pushed extremely cold air into the area and caused this year’s unusually cold August weather. This air system affected not just Reno but also surrounding areas of Nevada, causing temperatures to plummet by as much as thirty degrees below the seasonal average.ย
The cold temperatures also lead to the first snowfall of the season at some resorts in Tahoe, which is about 40 miles outside of Reno. Mount Rose, Nevada, received the first snowfall of the season. The ski area posted two images from its Northwest Express webcam: one showing snow falling all the way at the base of the mountain and another at 9,700 feet on the summit.
Other Nevada cities were also feeling the cold, as seen by record-breaking low high temperatures in Elko, Eureka, and Winnemucca. Elko smashed its record of 73ยฐF set in 1992 with a high of 70ยฐF, while Eureka tied its record from 1960 with a high of 68ยฐF.
