Warm weather is causing Ski Santa Fe in New Mexico to wrap up its season earlier than planned. Originally scheduled to remain open through April 6, the mountain will now close on Sunday, March 30, ending the 2024-25 season a full week ahead of schedule. A stretch of warm, dry weather has accelerated the mountainโs snowmelt. Forecasts from the National Weather Service show highs reaching into the 60s and 70s throughout the weekโtemperatures that have made it difficult to maintain base depth and keep terrain in skiable condition.
The season started at Ski Santa Fe on a high note with an early opening fueled by November storms. Heavy snowfall in early November allowed the resort to launch its season on November 23โthe earliest itโs opened since 2001. Despite the fast start, overall snowfall across Northern New Mexico this winter was minimal, testing the resortโs snowmaking efforts.
Still, resort leaders are calling the season a success. Eric Thompson, Ski Santa Feโs marketing director, told The Santa Fe New Mexican that โall in all, weโre happy with how the season went, despite the lack of great snow conditions.โ This year also marked the debut of the Santa Fe Express, a new high-speed quad lift. The upgrade cut ride time to just four minutesโless than half the time of the older Super Chiefโand helped ease congestion on busy weekends.
As of Monday, the resort was still holding a 38-inch base with 89% of terrain open. Beginner and intermediate trails had solid coverage, though snow was thinning on steeper, advanced runs. For those still hoping to squeeze in some spring turns, the mountain will celebrate its final day with a beach-themed event at Totemoffโs Bar & Grill, including live music from Half Broke Horses.
