Today was electric at Snowbird, Utah. It had snowed 31 inches since Monday night, and only the lower half of the Gad Valley was open yesterday, leaving most of the mountain wide open today. It was scheduled to be a perfect bluebird day.
In the morning, the energy was palpable, everywhere. People were lined up at their hotels and the bottom of the canyon, ready to move the moment that interlodge ended. When they removed the chain from the door, it was a mad dash with everyone heading to the same place: the tram.
Scoring first tram on a day like this is special. You have to try it someday. I’ve never seen a crowd of 99 other great skiers be so nervous and excited before. The moment we hit the top dock, we ran, clipped on our skis, and booked it to the Cirque.
The first 25 turns I got off the Cirque were absolutely ridiculous. The bowl above “Think Young” was also unbelievable. I’ve never sunk so much, it was genuinely waist deep. 31 inches of incredible 20:1 champagne blower. My trusty 100 underfoots did not feel wide enough.
We got in the back of the tram line, and it was a long one. We didn’t care. We ended up skiing Gad Chutes, Wilbere Bowl, Upper Cirque, and High Baldy.
Conditions started to deteriorate by midday due to skier traffic and sun exposure. I didn’t mind. All I can think about is that first run. I’ll probably be thinking about it for a long time. What a morning!
