Telluride Conditions Report: Big Base, Steep lines, and Blue Bird skies. Telluride is quite the gem in the buffet of ski resorts that Colorado has to offer. I have skied all over the Centennial State and can truly say as far as resorts go Telluride is truly unique, special and offers something for everyone. Somewhat off the beaten path, being the closest airports are Montrose or Durango thus preserving the goods for those who happen to live there or are visiting when the skies bless the area with snow. Surprise! Blower Pow Day at Kicking Horse, B.C. Sunday, January 18th was a classic day at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Only a few centimeters is predicted. You wake up and check the snow report; 1cm. Disappointed, you look outside and see nearly 20cm on your car. Surprise! Pow Day! This is what happen when a storm rolls in at 6am and drops a load after all the snow reports have gone out. To top it all off, no fair weather skiers show up and the lifts are empty. Despite being caught off guard and showing up an hour after the lifts crack, first tracks could be had line after line. North facing chutes were skiing a touch deeper than the south because of wind deposits. […] Conditions Report Guest Author | January 19, 2015 0 Comments
Kicking Horse, B.C. Powder Update: Now that the crowds are gone and the lifts are empty, mother nature has decided to bring the snow to Kicking Horse again. Monday, January 6 saw 9 cm of blower champagne powder like only -15 can bring. To top it off we were welcomed to 18 cm again Tuesday morning. As always with Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, the temperatures are going to stay cold and our snow will stay blower for the rest of the week. Guest Author | January 7, 2015 0 Comments
Crystal Mountain Weekly Report: Epic Re-Opening + 118″ of Snow Earlier this month, Crystal Mountain opened for a few days and closed soon after due to a deteriorating snowpack. A week ago, on December 22nd, Crystal was able to reopen the upper portion of the mountain, allowing hungry weekday skiers to enjoy deep, dry, bluebird powder turns. At 7am that Monday morning some evo coworkers and I left Seattle in search of hot laps and heavy snow. Conditions Report Rachel Delacour | December 29, 2014 0 Comments
Triumph of Tahoe Turns @ Carson Pass, CA – 06/15/14 After one of the driest years on record and in midst of a drought…would my June turns even come to fruition? It has almost become a yearly ritual in my household. Come mid-June, to climb and ski around the Carson Pass area off of Round Top Peak at 10,381 ft and then continue up and the down the chutes of all the Sisters Peaks (10,153 ft) down to Round Top Lake[…] Backcountry Casey Cane | June 24, 2014 6 Comments
Chasing Californian Couloirs @ Kirkwood, Sonora & Tioga Pass – 04/20/14 Given the low total snowfall for the season in California, the ski season is surely going to come to an abrupt ending, yet one positive aspects are mountain passes opening early for your ski touring pleasure. Sonora Pass opened to through traffic on Friday April 18th around noon while Tioga Pass was open from the East up to the Yosemite Park gate[…] Backcountry Casey Cane | April 29, 2014 3 Comments
Descending During the NorCal Drought @ Kirkwood – 01/18/14 Wow what a year eh? Not much has changed since my last update but the bottom line is that there is definitely some fun to be had in the Sierra Nevada Range. On January 11th, it actually snowed. Yes, those 4 inches made things steep and…well…a bit better than expected. Arrival at Kirkwood blessed us with a glimpse of winter. With temperatures in the 30s, a cool breeze, snow on the trees and crisp blue skies, it was shaping up to be a great late November, er January day. Given the lack of gnar on the slopes, I have been taking this opportunity to get my kids on the slopes. Parker, age 2, is pretty enthusiastic about wearing the gear, riding […] Conditions Report Casey Cane | January 24, 2014 5 Comments
Utah Backcountry Ski Report: Deep in Country Lane Chute, Little Cottonwood Canyon The early season here in the Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah has been STELLAR! The amount of backcountry pow the last month has been dreamy. In addition, Solitude, our first resort of the year is poised to open on the 8th. Things are going great here and now is one of the most exciting times to start picking off big lines. We are typically spoiled with superb access for all backcountry zones in our area so many times we are skinning from the car and skiing to the car. However early season poses some logistical challenges to add to the spice. […] Conditions Report Kyler Roush | November 5, 2013 1 Comment
