Fickle Snowpack Furor @ Kirkwood last week! Last week Kirkwood Mountain was graced with a freak massive amount of new snow of…wait for it…3 inches! Given the season so far, that 3 inch storm yields to one of the deepest powder days of the year! With a bluebird forecast the day after the major snow event, I rallied up to the mountain to see what I could find in and beyond the boundaries. Albeit with a firm layer underneath, those 3 in […] Conditions Report Casey Cane | February 4, 2015 0 Comments
Turning up the Base @ Telluride Given the current skiing status around the greater Lake Tahoe area, a quick decision was made to skip town and head to Telluride to find some snow over the Martin Luther King holiday. I have been frequenting Telluride almost yearly since 1998 and whether Winter or Summer, it is definitely a place that the whole family can enjoy…even for a stubborn father looking for some steeper turns[…] Conditions Report Casey Cane | January 25, 2015 1 Comment
Shreddin’ the Coral @ Kirkwood – still fun to be had! With 3mm of new snow under bluebird skies, it was one of those days skiers from California could only dream of at Kirkwood. So the MLK weekend monster storm is gone. Do you go skiing or do you stay home and purchase yet another DLC on Forza? […] Conditions Report Casey Cane | January 14, 2015 2 Comments

No Place quite like Taos New Mexico After doing reports and skiing amazing powder at Jackson Hole, Grand Targhee, and Alta, I felt that Taos would be a good throw back to appreciate where I come from. It was the day after Christmas and the report was showing 10in of overnight snow at Taos. I headed there with my brother, a legend in his own mind, and local legend, Todd Stewart. I knew the combination of great snow, good people, and an epic mountain would add up to the perfect day.the Blake Family, who owned the ski mountain since its inception in 1955, sold the entire mountain to billionaire Louis Beacon. Within in the first year, Mr. Beacon began a renaissance of sorts, installing a summer bike park and remodeling the base and village. Conditions Report Ryan Mulcahy | January 5, 2015 4 Comments
Triumph of Tahoe Turns @ Carson Pass, CA – 06/15/14 After one of the driest years on record and in midst of a drought…would my June turns even come to fruition? It has almost become a yearly ritual in my household. Come mid-June, to climb and ski around the Carson Pass area off of Round Top Peak at 10,381 ft and then continue up and the down the chutes of all the Sisters Peaks (10,153 ft) down to Round Top Lake[…] Backcountry Casey Cane | June 24, 2014 6 Comments
Chasing Californian Couloirs @ Kirkwood, Sonora & Tioga Pass – 04/20/14 Given the low total snowfall for the season in California, the ski season is surely going to come to an abrupt ending, yet one positive aspects are mountain passes opening early for your ski touring pleasure. Sonora Pass opened to through traffic on Friday April 18th around noon while Tioga Pass was open from the East up to the Yosemite Park gate[…] Backcountry Casey Cane | April 29, 2014 3 Comments
Tasting the Topography @ Telluride – 02/15/14 Yes, another Tahoe exodus for five days to find winter…of course, by the time of departure, the higher elevations of Tahoe received 8 feet of snow (Kirkwood) but ski trips get booked and you deal with it. So, off we went from SFO to Denver to Montrose with my 2 year old and buddy Dan to shred. Telluride is known for its funky town, box canyon vistas, Chair 9 bumps, steep piste, and a superb Ski School for the youngsters. But over the years, they’ve added some gnarly hike-to terrain into the mix. Of course, hiking to Palmyra Peak is the pinnacle of this in-bounds adventure but there’s also shorter hikes, to the left and right […] Conditions Report Casey Cane | February 24, 2014 1 Comment
