If you ever want to know details about a chairlift, unquestionably the best resource is Liftblog.com. The site contains a giant database dedicated to the latest news, reviews, and updates about every ski chairlift, tramway, and gondola in North America. It provides detailed information on new lift installations, technological advancements, industry news, and the history of ski lifts. The blog serves enthusiasts, professionals, and anyone interested in the ski lift industry, offering insights into lift projects, industry events, and innovations in lift design and operation. In total, the site covers around 750 ski areas and nearly 3,000 lifts.
The mastermind behind the blog is Peter Landsman, who started Liftblog in 2015 after years of documenting ski lifts around the United States. In 2022 he finished visits to all lifts in the U.S. and then turned his attention to all lifts in Canada. The project is really 25 years in the making as Landsman started journaling about ski lifts as a child.
Now, as originally reported by the Colorado Sun, Landsman will visit the last chairlift he has yet to document this month. That lift is the dangling T-bar at Moose Mountain in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Over the last year he has also visited 61 of the 62 new chairlifts in the U.S. Maybe even more impressive was that he was on an airplane traveling for 22 weeks in a row while also working full-time at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Wyoming.
Although Canada has less ski areas than the U.S., the vast area and remoteness proved challenging. In the U.S., only about one third of the country has ski areas, while in Canada they are spread over the entire country. The province of Quebec alone has 75 ski areas, more than any state in the U.S.
Landsman will continue to have his work cut out for him as there are about 55 new lifts planned for ski areas next season. What he continues to accomplish for chairlift lovers is truly remarkable.
