U.S. Snowboarder Chris Corning won Bronze at the Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle on Monday, February 27, 2023, at the 2023 World Championships in Bakuriani, Georgia. Corning is one of the most decorated snowboard athletes in FIS Snowboard history, having won the 2019 FIS Snowboard World Championships in Slopestyle. The podium at Bakuriani, Georgia, is Chris Corning’s fourth World Championships podium of his impressive career at only 23 years of age.
Marcus Kleveland of Norway took home Gold, with an incredible arsenal of tricks, making him the first man in FIS Freestyle World Championships history to earn back-to-back Slopestyle gold medals. Kleveland was under some pressure after falling on his first run, but took home the win with his second run. He went switch 270 on to 270 off on the first rail into a backside 360 to 50-50 to popped backside 180 off on the big tube. He went switch frontside 1260 stalefish before attempting the frontside triple cork 1440 weddle, that had tripped him up on run 1, but this time he stomped the landing. From there the Norwegian threw a backside double cork 1800 melon then went with a boardslide to underflip 630 on the canon rail, to a frontside 180 50-50 to switch backside 180 out on the fat tube, and finally a nollie backside lipslide 270 out on the final down rail, taking home the victory with 87.23 points with this mind-blowing run.
Japan’s Ryoma Kimata came second with 83.45 points. His run consisted of a frontside triple cork 1440 to backside double cork 1620 melon combo through jumps two and three. Kimata’s run was very impressive, landing the 20-year-old with a Silver medal in his first career World Championships competition.
Corning’s teammate Brock Crouch came eighth while Jake Canter came 11th. U.S. snowboarder Sean Fitzsimmons did not qualify for the finals and ended up in overall 36th place.
