Vail, CO, will celebrate Mikaela Shiffrin’s record-breaking Alpine Skiing World Cup victories with a celebration at the Solaris Plaza in Vail from 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2023. Shiffrin will be present, as well as other dignitaries and luminaries. The homecoming will include entertainment, guest appearances, and other celebratory activities. Mikaela Shiffrin was born in Vail in 1995 but now resides in Edwards, CO.
Mikaela Shiffrin broke Ingemar Stenmark’s longstanding record for most World Cup victories in March when the American ski racer won her 87th World Cup at Åre, Sweden, on March 11, 2023.
The celebration was announced on March 17 and dubbed ‘Mikaela87’ from when she broke the record. However, the 28-year-old finished the season with 88 World Cup victories after winning the Giant Slalom on March 19, 2023, at the World Cup Finals in Soldeu, Andorra. Aside from breaking her own record for most World Cup victories from the prior week, Shiffrin’s seventh Giant Slalom victory in the 22/23 season also marked her 21st career World Cup victory in that discipline, breaking Switzerland’s Vreni Schneider’s record, who had held the record for decades with 20 Giant Slalom World Cup victories in her career. Last but not least, Mikaela Shiffrin also beat Lindsey Vonn’s record for most career podiums, taking the new record number to 138 podiums.
Shiffrin’s tally of 88 World Cup victories in Alpine skiing is the sport’s all-time record, male or female.
