Report from December 13, 2023
The plan was to roll up to the top of 11,068′ Mt. Superior in Utah today.
I showed up at 9am and the east wind was ripping, snow-loading, and stripping the high peaks.
I quickly changed my plan.
I met up with Dr. Joe and we sauntered up Country Lane Chute on Mt. Superior.
We met a kind person named Eric who we hiked and chilled on top with.
The climb was unremarkable but I wore my crampons anyway, just in case.
The chute base and apron are now skiable, which is nice.
I made it to the top in 1 hour and 15 minutes.
I was tired.
I have skied every day since November 1 and it’s starting to show…
The chute itself was fun.
Chowdery, chalky, moguly, and simple compared to how it was most of November and early December.
No rocks to dodge, just ski.
Skiing right down to the road was a dream.
All of the other 5 times I skied it in November and December I had to walk down the base of the chute and the apron due to low snow.
Nothing but sun in the forecast.
Hopefully a storm rolls in soon but until then the ski resorts are skiing great and there is still fun to be had in the backcountry.
We did not see any signs of instability in the snowpack where we were.
Thanks, Utah
