Austrian mountain biker Fabio Wibmer is always sure to try something extreme. This time, the 28-year-old Red Bull athlete decided to go down the world-famous Streif in Kitzbühel, Austria, where today the FIS World Cup Men’s Downhill will be held.
The famous Hahnenkamm race is considered the world’s most challenging downhill ski race. More than 100,000 people come to Kitzbühel every year to watch the spectacle live and millions tune in on TV as the world’s best alpine skiers race down one of the steepest race slopes in the world, the Streif.
The Streif starts at an elevation of 5,463 ft (1,665 m) and goes along 2 miles to the finish at 2,641 ft (805 m). The steepest part, the “Mausefalle”(or mouse trap), has a gradient of 40.4° and FIS athletes are known to hit speeds of over 75–80mph. Now imagine doing that on a mountain bike and this is where Wibmer comes in.
Always known for crazy stunts and breathtaking videos, Wibmer and the Red Bull team filmed the video over five days on the world’s most difficult downhill course. Naturally, it was not without crashes and bloopers and Wibmer’s blooper real, released on his Instagram account, has garnered more than 160,000 views alone. “We thought about how to stop me after a backflip on the slopes, so we laid out nets,” the Austrian explains, “… the impact was quite violent.”
