Early October Mountain Weather Update

As we enter October, the weather pattern for North American ski regions is characterized by:

Pacific Northwest and British Columbia

  • Storm systems bringing rain and snow to British Columbia
  • Snow accumulation is expected above 6,000-7,000 feet in the Coastal Range and interior
  • Potential for snow at Mount Baker (Washington) by October 10th

Interior Western U.S.

  • High-pressure system dominating, resulting in dry conditions
  • Abnormally warm temperatures are forecast through mid-October
  • Yellowstone area experiences daily highs around 60ยฐF, well above average

Storm Track and Precipitation

  • Primary storm track favoring Alaska, Canada, and British Columbia
  • Lower 48 states remain mostly dry through October 10th
  • No significant snowfall is expected in U.S. ski regions during this period

Outlook

  • The current high and dry pattern is expected to persist until at least October 10th
  • Potential for a slight pattern shift in mid to late October, possibly bringing storms further south

Early season conditions appear most promising for skiers and snowboarders in the higher elevations of British Columbia. U.S. resorts may need to wait until later in October for a potential change in the weather pattern to bring more favorable conditions for snowmaking and natural snowfall.
